This dynamic course explores foundational and emerging concepts in affective neuroscience research related to embodied clinical practice. Each session engages the neurologically interrelated functions of sensation, perception, emotion, memory, and cognition through play and interaction.
Experiential and theoretical learning is guided by clinically relevant inquiry into neuroplasticity and the developing mind. Students are supported by creative online modules and synchronous learning before and after the in-person weekend.
How can we engage and impact the mind through movement to learn and heal? How are states of mind co-created? How do relationships/environments impact brain development and functioning? How can our neurophysiology inform and support our embodied clinical practices?
Topics include:
- Interoception: vagal & somatic mapping
- Flow: cerebrospinal fluid, neurons, glial cells, and neurotransmitters
- Implicit/explicit processes: accessing the potency of awareness & attention
- Building neuro-resilience: ecosystems of conscious social/cultural relationship
The course integrates visual learning, theoretical research, interactive experiential learning, and discussion. When offered virtually, it includes 12 hours of online learning modules followed by 18 hours of face to face synchronous sessions. A final integrative project determined by student consolidates the learning for each participant.
“The neurocognitive system…..exists only enmeshed in the world in which we move and live with others through our bodily existence”
